Participants Paint the Peak Pink
In Support Of Breast Cancer Awareness
(20 October 2013 – Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation (“HKBCF”) hosted its 9th Pink Walk for Breast Health on the Peak today, in support of the worldwide breast cancer awareness month. This year’s Pink Walk broke previous records by attracting 2,000 participants who dressed in pink to promote breast health awareness and raised nearly HK$3 million, setting another record for the Pink Walkathon.
At the officiating ceremony Mrs Regina Leung, the Honorary Patron of the HKBCF and wife of the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, highly appreciated the meaningful work of the HKBCF, in providing support to breast cancer patients and reinforcing breast health awareness in the community.
Dr Polly Cheung, Founder of the HKBCF, reminded participants of the importance of regular breast examination and screening.
“The latest research findings of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Registry from about 10,000 local breast cancer cases showed that women at the age of 40-59 were at high risk of developing breast cancer and a majority of breast cancer patients (85%) were self-detected by chance. At first diagnosis, most patients (84%) were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and their tumours were on average 5 times bigger than screen-detected tumours. The chances of chemotherapy treatment were much higher than screen-detected patients,” shared Dr Cheung.
Mrs Eliza Fok, Chairman of the HKBCF, and a breast cancer survivor, encouraged the participants to do at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise every day.
“Lack of exercise ranked number one in the top ten risks factors for breast cancer, and for one’s own health, it is important to build up the habit of regular exercise, ” Mrs Fok advised.
Highlighted at the kick-off ceremony, Mrs Eliza Fok shared the achievements attained by the HKBCF in promoting breast health in Hong Kong.
“There were more than 3,000 new breast cancer cases diagnosed in Hong Kong every year. The HKBCF Support Services had provided various kinds of services to about 660 people, representing more than 20% of newly diagnosed cases annually,” she shared.
The HKBCF’s Breath Health Centre provides professional and affordable breast screening services to the public. In the first two years since its establishment, HKBCF had provided breast screening services to more than 12,000 clients, 5,000 of which are from low-income or financially challenged backgrounds. They received our screening and diagnostic services free of charge.
Officiating guests at the Pink Walk for Breast Health 2013 kick-off ceremony included Mrs Regina Leung, Honorary Patron of the HKBCF and wife of Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr. Charles Yang, BBS, JP, Chairman, Admissions, Budgets & Allocations Committee of The Community Chest of Hong Kong, Professor Peggy Lam, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Federation of Women, Mrs Eliza Fok, Chairman of the HKBCF, Dr Polly Cheung, Founder of the HKBCF and Ms Bernice Liu, HKBCF Ambassador.
